UPDATED 20/5/26: Unknown cathinone identified as N-sec-butyl butlyone

On March 6th, the Victorian Pill Testing Service reported that an unknown synthetic cathinone has been detected in three samples of white powder expected to contain 3-MMC or 4-MMC. This compound has now been identified as N-sec-butyl butylone.

There is no information available about effects, risks, dose, or duration.

What has been detected?

Three samples containing an unknown synthetic cathinone have been detected by the Victorian Pill Testing Service in the December 2025/January 2026.

  • Two samples (expected 3-MMC) were purchased from darknet markets
  • One sample (expected 4-MMC) was obtained locally

These samples have been analysed using multiple analytical techniques, including NMR spectroscopy.

VPTS have now determined that this substance is N-sec-butyl butylone.

This substance was confirmed by comparing our results with data from the Centre for Forensic Science.

What are synthetic cathinones?

Synthetic cathinones are a group of stimulant drugs that include:

  • 3-MMC
  • 4-MMC (mephedrone)
  • Methylone
  • 4-CMC

Some synthetic cathinones have been associated with serious harms.

Because very little is known about N-sec-butyl butylone, the risks are unpredictable.

Harm Reduction Tips

Its best to test!
Understand what’s really in your drugs.

Avoid using alone.
Have people you trust around you that can help if you have an emergency.

Start low and go slow.
Start with less than your usual amount. Wait until you feel effects before taking any more.
Small increases in dose may have a big increase in duration and effects. Avoid taking more of a substance if you feel any unexpected effects, including effects coming on very quickly or not at all.

Avoid mixing substances.
Risks may increase when used alongside other substances, particularly other stimulants like methamphetamine, and drugs that increase serotonin like MDMA.

If you experience any effects you wouldn’t usually expect, seek medical help.
