Two light/tan powder samples presented to CanTEST expected to contain a novel benzodiazepine, were instead found to contain the novel synthetic cannabinoid, AB-MDSBA. No benzodiazepines were detected. The two samples were acquired separately from different sources.

What is AB-MDMSBA? AB-MDMSBA is structurally similar to other known synthetic cannabinoids. There is little known about it. In the international context, it may have already been identified by law enforcement, but there is no reference in clinical literature as to its effects.

Prior to testing completed by CanTEST and ANU Research School of Chemistry, AB-MDMSBA had been reported by a single drug checking agency (UNC Street Drug Analysis Lab) in Johnson City, NY on 16 September 2024. In that case, it was also presented to the lab as an expected type of benzodiazepine.

Effects? Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRA) are chemicals that stimulate the cannabinoid receptors within the body and can have some similar effects to THC. THC is the major active ingredient in cannabis. In general, SCRAs are less safe than cannabis. They have been associated with deaths due to both toxicity and user behaviour while experiencing the effects.
