Novel benzodiazepine found in counterfeit ‘Xanax’ pressed pill and off-white powder
Two samples presented for checking at Cheqpoint’s Bowen Hills location, now closed, have been found to contain ethylbromazolam as the primary ingredient.

- Sample A: white brick-shaped ‘Xanax’ bar. Poor quality, crumbly press
- Sample B: off-white loose powder
Little is known about the effects of this research chemical with the latest detection in this region being reported by High Alert New Zealand in March this year. This is the first time this substance has been detected by a drug checking service in Australia.
Novel benzodiazepine drugs can have unpredictable effects, unpredictable dosages and may be more potent than the substance it is sold as. This is particularly true when combined with other depressants such as alcohol, GHB or opiates.
Suspect an overdose?
If you suspect a benzodiazepine overdose call 000 and wait with the person making sure they are on their side to avoid choking.
- Naloxone tip: does not reverse benzos. Use if opioids are suspected, or if you’re unsure.
- Position matters: put them on their side to prevent choking.
- Dosing danger: strength and contents vary wildly. There is no safe dose you can count on.
