Two coral-coloured Kenzo tiger pills contained N,N-dimethylpentylone instead of MDMA. An unknown white powder that was also tested was found to contain N,N-dimethylpentylone.

What is N,N-dimethylpentylone?

N,N-Dimethylpentylone is a stimulant and synthetic cathinone with an increased risk of harm if taken in high doses or combined with MDMA or other stimulants.

Risks:

• Can cause high blood pressure and put strain on the cardiovascular system
• Higher doses can greatly increase the
  duration of effects (>24hrs)
• Has been reported to cause high levels of anxiety, agitation and confusion
• Potential for severe physical outcomes such as seizures and cardiotoxicity

Effects:

• Inability to sleep, even after 24 hours
• Uncomfortably high heart rate and/or breathlessness
• Rigid muscles and/or cramping
• Confusion, agitation or hallucinations
• Hyperthermia (overheating), with an inability to cool down
• Unforeseen or unexpected effects (compared to MDMA)

Harm reduction advice:

• Start low, go slow. Unusual effects could be a sign of unexpected ingredients like N,N-dimethylpentylone
• Stay cool and stay hydrated
• If you can’t cool down or you’re
  experiencing unexpected effects, don’t
  take more
• Call triple zero ‘000’ if you are
  concerned
