What is N,N-dimethylpentylone?

N,N-Dimethylpentylone (DMP) is a synthetic cathinone stiumlant.

There’s limited information about this substance, but it’s been associated with increased risks to the heart, and in higher doses, to serious neuropsychiatric effects.

The risk of experiencing harm from N,N-dimethylpentylone is increased when mixed with MDMA or other stimulants.

Risks

• Serotonin toxicity (especially when combined with MDMA)
• Hyperthermia (especially when combined with other stimulant drugs like MDMA, cocaine or methamphetamine)
• Cardiotoxicity (high blood pressure, arrhythmias)
• Hallucinations
• Behavioural changes (aggression, agitation, confusion, mania, anxiety)
• Higher doses greatly increase the duration of effects (24+ hours)
• Seizures

Effects

Based on online reports from people intentionally using N,N-dimethylpentylone, the experience is mostly described as negative.

Reported effects include:

• Insomnia or inability to sleep for long periods of time after taking the drug
• Rigid muscles, cramping
• Anxiety, overstimulation, agitation confusion
• Hallucinations
• Increase energy and sensory enhancement
• Hyperthermia or feeling like they can’t cool down

Harm reduction tips

• Start low and go slow – start with ½ or less than your usual dose
• Avoid re-dosing if you feel any unexpected effects e.g. extra rapid onset or not feeling any effects after taking
• Hydrate and keep cool by taking regular breaks from activity
• Call ‘000’ (triple zero) if you experience unexpected effects from any substance or are concerned about yourself or your friends
• Avoid using alone
