What are nitazenes?

Nitazenes are a type of potent synthetic opioid (PSO). Strength varies, but some PSOs are more potent than fentanyl and up to 500x more potent than heroin. Risk of overdose from nitazenes is very high. A very small amount can result in overdose. Strength can also vary with in a single batch.

Look for signs of overdose

Signs/symptoms of overdose are similar to heroin and other opioids.

Signs to watch for:

• extreme drowsiness
• difficulty or unable to wake someone when they ‘nod off’
• shallow breathing or snoring
• cold and clammy skin
• a blue or grey tinge to lips and/or nails
• pin point pupils.

If you notice these signs in someone and are concerned, call 000 and administer naloxone, and if necessary, provide rescue breaths.

Harm reduction tips

Carry naloxone.

Even if you don’t plan to take an opioid. Naloxone temporarily reverses opioid effects. You may need a higher dose or to repeat doses with nitazenes. It is legal and available from most pharmacies.

Avoid using alone.

Make sure to be around people you trust who can look after you if something does go wrong.

Start Low-Go Slow.

Even a small amount can be fatal. Start with 1/4 of your usual amount.

Call 000 immediately

if you or someone else feels any adverse effects from a drug.

The pill was purchased in the last two weeks in Victoria and a person has experienced high harm.

Pharmaceuticals acquired from unregulated markets are very commonly fake and their composition is unreliable.
