A synthetic cathinone – N-isopropyl butylone – has been detected in a sample that also contained cocaine. There is very little information available about effects, risks, dose or duration.

What is it?

N-Isopropyl butylone is a relative of butylone – a synthetic cathinone stimulant.

Its chemical structure indicates that it:

• May be potent
• May be long-acting
• May modulate levels of serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline

Important to note:

We don’t know what the effects of combining N-isopropyl butylone with cocaine might be. Effects may be unpredictable.

Similar synthetic cathinones are known to have a steep dose-response curve. This means that a small increase in dose can lead to a much larger increase in intensity and duration of effects.

When combined with cocaine, these risks are like to increase.

Harm Reduction Tips

Start low and go slow. Small increases in dose may have a big increase in duration and effects.

Avoid taking more, if there are any unexpected effects. This includes the effects coming on very quickly or not feeling anything for a while after taking it.

Avoid mixing substances. Risks are increased when used alongside other psychoactive substances, particularly other stimulants like methamphetamine, and drugs that increase serotonin like MDMA.

Avoid using alone. Have people you trust around you that can help if you have an emergency.

Overdose Response

Call triple zero ‘000’ immediately if you or someone else feels unwell including:

• Agitation or confusion
• Psychosis
• Heavy sweating, feeling very hot
• Shaking, muscle twitching or stiff muscles
• Rapid heart rate or chest pain
• Loss of consciousness or seizures
• Any other unexpected or concerning
• symptoms

It’s best to test! Only a very small amount is needed – approximately 10mg (0.01g)
