Methamphetamine detected in red capsules expected to be MDMA

No MDMA was detected in the samples.

What has been detected?

  • Methamphetamine was detected in two capsules (with a small ‘heart’ print). No MDMA was present.
  • Methamphetamine (crystal meth, meth, ice) is a powerful stimulant, much more potent and stimulating than MDMA, with little to no euphoric effect.
  • If you cannot access drug checking services, methamphetamine can be detected with reagent kits
  • Marquis reagent will turn dark orange or brown in the presence of methamphetamine or will turn dark purple / black in the presence of MDMA. In mixtures of MDMA and methamphetamine the MDMA reaction can hide the methamphetamine colour.

Meth can lead to overamping.

Meth can lead to ‘overamping’ (when stimulant use goes a little overboard), especially when a person is physically or mentally stressed or when combined with other substances.

Overamping can look like:

  • inability to remain
  • still inability to sleep
  • increased heart rate and pulse
  • grinding teeth
  • overheating or severe sweating
  • paranoia or confusion
  • chest pain

Overamping can lead to:

  • heart attack
  • stroke
  • seizure
  • hyperthermia (extreme overheating)

If you suspect someone could be overamping

  • Encourage them into a calmer space with fresh air
  • Help them stay cool with ice packs, wet clothes, fans etc
  • Offer water or drinks with electrolytes
  • Provide reassurance

Call triple zero ‘000’ if the person:

  • is a danger to themselves or others
  • CANNOT cool down
  • is experiencing chest pain
  • is showing signs of stroke
  • if the person loses consciousness, administer naloxone (won’t reverse a stimulant overdose but will be effective if opiates are also on board) AND call triple zero ‘000’
