What is it?

Medetomidine is a non-opioid sedative used as a veterinary drug.
It is very potent — consuming even a small amount can result in heavy sedation.

The sample was acquired in Victoria in the last week.

Important to note:

Medetomidine is NOT an opioid — its effects will not be reversed by naloxone.

If purchasing bromazolam avoid use with other benzos, opioids, or other non-opioid sedatives.

Harm reduction tips

Avoid using alone. Make sure to be around people you trust who can look after you if something does go wrong.

Start Low – Go Slow. Even a small amount can be fatal. Start with ¼ of your usual amount.

Avoid mixing substances.
Risk of overdose is increased when used with depressants like alcohol, benzos, GHB, opioids or ketamine.

Call 000 immediately if you or someone else experiences any adverse effects.

Carry naloxone.
Although naloxone WON’T WORK on medetomidine, if there are any opioids in the system it will temporarily reverse them which may help revive the person.

Overdose Signs:

• Slumping over while sitting or standing
• Unwakeable or nodding off
• Not breathing or shallow breaths
• Gurgling sounds or snoring
• Blue or grey fingertips or lips

Overdose Response:

• call 000 immediately
• put the person in the recovery position (lay them on their side with their top leg bent and bottom arm straight under their head so that they can’t roll onto their back)
• monitor breathing
• if breathing stops, start rescue breathing
