SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF OVERODSE

Effects and signs of heroin (opioid) overdose – lowered/loss of consciousness, breathing slowly, tiny/pinpoint pupils, discoloured lips or nails, cold or clammy skin, choking/coughing/gurgling or snoring sounds.

HARM REDUCTION

Carry Naloxone – it can reverse an opioid overdose. While it won’t reverse a stimulant overdose, it will not cause harm to administer if someone is showing signs of an overdose and you’re unsure if they’ve consumed opioids. Always keep naloxone on hand.

Be alert for signs of an overdose – knowing that the signs can vary depending on the type of overdose being experienced. Think someone may be experiencing an overdose? Always call 000 immediately (even if you have and use naloxone).

Start low, go slow. Never use alone – get a trusted person to check on you. Experiencing delayed, adverse or unexpected effects? Don’t take more.

GETTING HELP

If you or your friends see the warning signs of overdose:

• Seek help immediately from your nearest emergency department or call Triple Zero (000). You won’t get into trouble for seeking medical care.
• Start CPR if someone is not breathing.
• Use naloxone if you have it. Call ‘000’ even if naloxone has been given.
