3-HO-PCP found in ketamine sample

Source: CanTEST

A white powder sample presented as ketamine found to contain 3-HO-PCP (aka 3-hydroxphencyclidine)

What is 3-HO-PCP? A dissociative analgesic from the arylcyclohexylamine family with effects reported to be similar to phencyclidine (PCP or “angel dust”). Little is known about 3-HO-PCP’s pharmacology and toxicity for humans, but animal studies have shown it can affect opioid receptors and may cause breathing difficulties.

Effects may include a reduced level of consciousness, excessive sweating, high heart rate, high blood pressure, high temperature and visual distortions. 3-HO-PCP is reported to have a slower onset of action than ketamine, which increases the risk of overdose if redosing.

Know the signs if you think someone is experiencing an overdose or adverse reaction, call 000 for an ambulance immediately.

Keep calm and cool. Stay protected from the sun, take regular breaks to cool down, stay hydrated (500mL water an hour) and eat!

Start low, go slow. Try to avoid re-dosing. 3-HO-PCP takes longer than ketamine to take effect and wear off.

Avoid mixing 3-HO-PCP or ketamine with depressants such as opioids, benzos, GHB or alcohol – it can increase the risk of overdose.

Be alert for signs of agitation or aggression – it could be the first signs of something more serious. It may indicate overdose on 3-HO-PCP and these aren’t common effects of ketamine.
